In October 2019, it was announced that Russell Crowe had signed on to star in a film originally titled The Georgetown Project, directed by M. A. Fortin and Joshua John Miller, who also co-wrote the screenplay. Miramax was set to produce the movie. The cast expanded in November 2019 to include Ryan Simpkins, Chloe Bailey, Sam Worthington, David Hyde Pierce, Tracey Bonner, Samantha Mathis, Adrian Pasdar, and Adam Goldberg.
Principal photography commenced in November 2019 in Wilmington, North Carolina, wrapping up in December of that year. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, additional filming was postponed until 2023, taking place across New York City, Los Angeles, and Australia. Post-production work continued until January 2024, when the film underwent a title change to The Exorcism.
